Official pictures and details of the Volkswagen E-Bugster concept and VW Jetta Hybrid have leaked prior to their unveiling at tomorrow's Detroit motor show.
The E-Bugster is based on the all-new Beetle and is believed to promote both the forthcoming VW Beetle Cabriolet and VW's electric powertrain technology.
The electric drive unit on the Bugster features a 114bhp motor that produces 199lb ft of torque. The lithium ion battery pack sits in the rear of the car and weighs 315kg. The car has a range of around 80 miles, and can be quick charged to 80 per cent of its capacity in 30 minutes.
The Jetta Hybrid is set to go on sale in the US later this year. It is powered by a 150bhp 1.4-litre turbocharged petrol engine with 184lb ft of torque, with a further 36bhp available from its electric motor.
The seven-speed DSG gearbox can also decouple to allow the Jetta Hybrid to run on electrci power only for 1.2 miles and at up to 44mph. The Jetta Hybrid is said by VW to weigh just 100kg more than the standard car. Average economy is rated at 45mpg.
