The all-new Volvo V40 five-door hatchback will cost from £19,745 when it goes on sale in September.

Two petrol and three diesel engines complete the range at launch. The most frugal engine will be the 113bhp 1.6-litre diesel D2 mated to a six-speed manual gearbox. It emits just 94g/km CO2 – qualifying it for zero road tax – while returning 78.5mpg, according to Volvo. The optional £1485 six-speed automatic gearbox is only available on diesel models.

The most powerful engine in the V40 range – the 178bhp T4 petrol – will be joined by an even more potent T5 unit later in the model’s life. All cars in the range are fitted with stop-start.

The V40 comes in three trim levels – ES, SE and SE LUX – with Bluetooth, climate control, an entertainment system with a five-inch colour screen, 16-inch alloys, Volvo’s City Safety system and a pedestrian airbag – a world first – fitted as standard across the board.

Mid-spec SE cars add cruise control, keyless start and chrome touches to the car’s exterior, while range-topping SE Lux variants get a leather interior, 17-inch alloys, and LED daytime running lights.

The most expensive V40 in the range is the D4 (175bhp) SE Lux Nav which costs £26,795.
